Student-to-student interaction.
Language Area: Speaking
Level of Language Proficiency: High Beginner / Intermediate
Aims: To have students produce oral dialogue about homes in different settings (Urban and Rural).
Class time: 15 minutes
Preparation time: 2-4 minutes
Resources: iPads; Zillow app
Background:
Students have been exploring different populace settings (rural, suburban, and urban). Students have described where they think they live now, where they lived in their native countries, where they would like to live, and where they would not like to live. Students have completed a picture game, where Student A grabs a picture without looking at it. Student B describes the picture to Student A, and Student A decides whether the picture they are holding is urban, suburban, or rural.
Procedure: (This is the final activity for the class period.)
Students will be using the Zillow app (a house hunting app) on the iPads. Students will be given two cities: New York City, NY and Spearfish, SD. Student A will be examining NYC, and Student B will be examining Spearfish. Students will write down facts and descriptions about the homes they are finding, such as price, size, amenities, etc. Students will then turn to their partner and relay the information about the homes they are finding. Then students will discuss the major differences that they find in their respective locations, as well as any homes/condos that they would like to live in.
